Content description
Collection of nine tales set in Alsace and on the left bank of the Rhine: Myrtille, Mon illustre ami Selsam, La Pêche miraculeuse, Le Trésor du vieux seigneur, La Reine des abeilles, Le Talion, Le Blanc et le Noir, La Voleuse d'enfants and Le Cabaliste Hans Weinland. They combine Alsatian rural genre writing with the fantastic and the legendary. The volume opens with a note by the authors, dated Paris, 11 July 1863, in which Émile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian declare for the first time that the signature stands for two writers.
General notes
Copy undated on the title page; dated ca. 1863 from the authors' note of 11 July 1863 and from the Ch. Lahure printer's imprint, which predates 1870. The statement «troisième édition» numbers commercial impressions and does not date the copy: the 283-page setting remained in use until at least a 27th edition.
