Content description
The last novel Joseph Conrad completed, published in 1923. Set on the coast of Provence during the Napoleonic Wars, it tells of the return of the old privateer Peyrol, seasoned in the Indian seas, to a retreat near Toulon, where he becomes caught up in watching the English fleet and in a final sacrifice for France. A novel of the sea and of old age, elegiac in tone, about loyalty, rootlessness and coming to terms with one's own past. A volume of the Uniform Edition of Conrad's works published by J. M. Dent.
